Default New piece

I don't have much time for any serious burning now with all our packing but I just finished this fun piece while at our last show. I'm gearing up for our new home in New Mexico as you can see.

Al made this utensil holder and carved the spoons. It's made out of maple and I have repeating patterns on the other sides. I'm also burning a napkin holder to match.

This is the fun stuff that I can zip through in short order. I had the whole thing done in a couple of hours from start to finish. It was all done with a single temperature burner.

Very nice... I notice that that the objects are filled solid with color... Is that wood burned too or is it painted?

Hi Eddy, I don't paint or use color. It's all burned. For this design I used the old-fashioned single temperature burner. I was trying to make it look like a silhouette, nothing fancy, just a simple design. Definately a switch from the things I usually do but this was fun to do. It was Al's first attempt at making the utensil holder and it actually came out pretty good for a first attempt.

I drew the design on the napkin holder last night and will try to get that burned in over the weekend in between packing boxes...

It's amazing what you can do with those cheap burners....

I'm not ready to make a career of doing silhouette's but it sure made a nice utensil holder.

Beuatiful piece, I love the silouhette style of it as well as the simplicity of it.

Nice job!

the hardest part of the entire thing was trying to get into the tight spots with that darned burner. I'm so used to using the thin pens it's hard holding onto that big burner. I really thought for this particular piece anything more complicated would just be overkill. Simple seemed best.

Nedar... Thanks for explaining. The reason I asked is that I do similar burning projects only I mix woodburning with painting with acrylics. I'd post some of my work but I'm afraid that Disney or Warner Brothers would have a cow if they saw it. I decorate shelves and plaques with Quaker pegs in them with cartoon characters for the grand kids. Everytime one of the grandkids latches on to another favorite character it gives me the excuse to do another project. Eventually they move past cartoons and super heroes and on to dragons, unicorns, eagles...etc. Some of my projects, like the dragons, get really detailed but when painted look really sharp!

It sounds very interesting Eddy but your right, best not to test fate in posting licensed characters on the internet.

I used to use color in my burnings but as I progressed into more difficult pieces and changed my focus I because one of those crazy purists. Now if I want to use color I just use color and draw. So, I don't really mix the mediums but it gives me an opportunity to try new things.

I'm sure your grandkids must love those pieces you do and you must get a lot of enjoyment knowing how much they love them. Gee when they grow up your really going to have to change your focus...do I see some rock stars in your future?
