| | Re: New burning on maple burl Very nice job. I like the color although I have never tried adding color myself. It really brings the burning to life! Thanks for sharing.

| | Re: New burning on maple burl I forgot to mention that I used a Colwood Super Pro II woodburner and a bent spear shader (like the Razertip) that they made for me on the burning. I did everything but the hair with it. I used my Wall Lenk single temp burner with a rheostat for the hair.
Maple burls are fun to work with but hard wood so it does take quite a bit longer to burn. But between the figuring in the wood and the unusual shape with the natural edge it makes each burning very unique.
Funny thing is that I was working on a bobcat on a burl but one day when we were wandering around in Albuquerque's Old Town area taking some photos I saw this street man. He had long hair and he was wearing this dirty, old torn shirt with an indian on it just like him. His long hair and the indian's on the shirt was flying in the wind (we were having our usual wind gusts that day). His face was very tanned and dirty but something about him just hit me. I got a photo and it was just enough to make me go home and put the other burning away and dig out a burl that would work for what I wanted to do.
I originally planned to do the head bandana in a think wash to have the figuring show through but it didn't look very good so I went ahead and added more paint and less extender. I did do the neck bandana in a very thin wash so the figuring in the burl becomes the pattern in the bandana material.
Al and I researched Navajo names that would relate to wind and came up with Niyol Hastiin which means wind man.

| | Re: New burning on maple burl Beautifully done. The burl gives it such a great setting, and adds to the effect. Enjoy the simple portrait, yet am envious of the not so simple skills that it takes to achieve such a great image of the man. Well done Nedra.

| | Re: New burning on maple burl Thank you all. It certainly was a challenge burning the portrait on a burl but I am thrilled with it.

| | Re: New burning on maple burl Hi Nedra, Very well done,as you usually do. I see you got the ColwoodSuper Pro II. Is this your preference now? If so why? I have the Razertip and like it for the small amount of burning that I do. If it ever burns out it is good to know the good points of others. See just a little color isn't bad. LOL.
