| | my first real effort at a pyrography project i been working on this scene over the past months on and off, with about 5 hours into it,, finely called it done ? opinions & comments Please!"
posted to my wci gallery for larger view click here
sanded to 400 grit, used spear point ?(p2) tip on my optma1 , and calligraphy tip on a single heat burner.
box was a michaels premade project box.
this is the first real effort in a burning, i been using my burner to detail into my carvings but never breathed this much smoke....
my wife said she could easily sell it."in a tourist trap," for $20.00 but i dont know if that was a good comment or a snide remark..?
alligator leg and tail was worked on after photos
wondering if i should leave it alone or use some light washes like light blue on the water????
Q:? and opinions PLEAZE

| | Re: my first real effort at a pyrography project Well, I am not supper experienced but I like it. In fact just this morning I waded 3 foot water to get to my favorite cypress knee spot to harvest a few more knees.
Just remember, sunlight will lighten the burning quite a bit. Because of that you want to be sure to go quite dark in the dark areas and shade down from there.
It will also help if you put the burning in an area of the house that is out of direct light.

| | Re: my first real effort at a pyrography project Keep up the good work Thomp. You certainly aren't wasting your time!
I would suggest a lighter touch on the pen, to lighten the work up some. You can do that using a sharp knife as a scraper too, to clean up the areas that you find too dark. Don't use sandpaper though, except in preparing your surface before burning, it's too difficult to control.
Looking forward to seeing more scenes from you. Watch it though, they become addictive!

| | Re: my first real effort at a pyrography project im addicted alright.... must be the glue in that chinese box from michaels,
i finely fixed a 110vac computer case fan to blow into a dryer tube attached to a hole in 1x25x6" plywood i place in the winder and pull it down, the fan sucks out the smoke and fumes..
now i need to make a back patting hand on a stick.... for my atty-a-boy
my wife has many more projects in the near future for me and the burner, scroll saw, and carving tools, but she dont know what im going to teach her over the same period, she already knows the scroll saw.... He hee...<grin>
next is pattern tracing and then wood burner operation
Oh big discovery:
single heat wood burners can be controlled with the $12.00 router speed control sold at harbor freight...or at least mine can be... |

| | Re: my first real effort at a pyrography project Great beginnings. My only suggestions would be for future to lighten the lights, especially the background and perhaps not make the background quite so busy. Otherwise a very good first burning.
