| | Re: Mule Deer WIP Susan - Thanks - this is exactly what I need to tackle that raccoon. May I please have your permission to copy and print your photos and your instructions so I can have them in front of me ?
I've never seen a "shader" point ... I'll check Colwood's site and see if they have anything similar. That doesn't imply I can USE one !! |

| | Re: Mule Deer WIP Nancy,
Please, Absoluetly, Yes! And slip over to the Free Carving Patterns section here on WCI for the large colored photo and pattern! That's one of the fun reasons for posting a WCI. And PLEASE, add your images here or at least on the forum as I would love to see your version (and anyone or everyone else's - hint, hint Nedra!) of the Mule Deer.
If you or anyone wants bigger close-ups of an area let me know. I have saved all the scans as a hugh tif file so I can snatch close-ups very easily.

| | Re: Mule Deer WIP Nedra?
As you sell Razortips do you have any images of the different tips ... the writing tip and shader tip ... that you could share here so everyone knows what we are talking about. Thanks!!!!

| | Re: Mule Deer WIP I have the second layering done in the face, bib, neck and antlers. The grayscale lets you (and me) see where I am and where this has to go next.
Notice that the muzzel and bib are white in color so the shading lines in these areas are much lighter and fewer in number. I am trying to let as much of the basswood as possible show. The ears were fun because they roll concave, then convex, then back to concave ... hope I go those terms right ...? Plus on the highest area of the ear he has black markings (where the highlight would be) and white markings inside (where the shadow would be) ...
To my eye, in the third layer, I need to concentrate on the body portion from the shoulders back. This area has to go much darker. I also need to add a stronger shading to the deer side of the tree trunk to tuck it under or behind the deer.
I still haven't gotten into the black yet, that come next also. I am going to take time to earse any remianing pencil tracing lines and do a light sanding.

Oh ... that's probably all I'll get done today. Mike and I have to slip into B'more for the afternoon. It's a long drive in the big city for us country folk so I doubt if I'll do anything but crash later this evening. See ya all tomorrow. |

| | Re: Mule Deer WIP Susan, I will try to put them here at a later date but we are getting ready to go on vacation and I don't have much time. We're heading down to the casino tonight to firm up some plans for the Pyrography festival, get the layout of the event center so we can plan on booth space, etc.
Here is a direct link to my website with the Razertip pens. Each of the pens (that I keep in stock) are listed with photos. The pens I use primarily are:
HD5MP Spear shader - you can see two views of it. This is the pen I use 99% of the time
F9S - writing tip is the one I use most, it's the most versatile size
HD14SM - this is the size round-heeled knife that I use and again it is the most versatile size. http://http://www.nedraspyrography.c...Order_Page.htm
Hope this helps

| | Re: Mule Deer WIP Well, I think it's finished. I have added the very darkest values with the blackest area being your left side of his neck, the inside corners of his ears, and his eyes.
The temp was turned up just a bit from the last, middle setting and I finished him off with the small writing tip ... so it's a one tip burning.

| | Re: Mule Deer WIP Here's the value scale and the finished. You can see that I am way below the darkest value that I did on the scale ... about four more values.

| | Re: Mule Deer WIP OK ... here's the final test. Did it come out as a representation of the original grayscale photo/image? Of quick note, because the white in the Mule Deer Carvingwas painted to the basswood surface and I did not paint white to the burning - the palest burned areas can only be as pale as the basswood not the white paint.
