| | Re: Leather Purse - WIP Merle, Lindy answered the question but I'll add that there are a lot of companies that have vegetable tanned leather. Some actually have better quality and prices but unfortunately I don't have my list of suppliers any longer. Perhaps some of the other's who might have the resources will pipe in here.
I used Tandy when I was working at the VA because we had a government contract with them and that's where we had to buy it but their leather wasn't as nice as the leather I got for personal use. They were all vegetable tanned and all in the USA. If I can find them I will pass on the information.
Just found a few of the resources I had bookmarked. Some are just informative. If I can find the additional resources for supplies I'll post it later. http://www.sbearstradingpost.com/too...er.html#VegTan http://www.springfieldleather.com/ca...ng_bellies.asp http://members.madasafish.com/~stuar...er%20Terms.htm

| | Re: Leather Purse - WIP Susan - Bonnie: Thank you so much for your encouragement, it means a lot!
Here are some more WIP pictures. I've finished the front and am now working the back. I've decided not to add any borders as I feel that would make the whole piece too busy. |

| | Re: Leather Purse - WIP Lindy, I don't think you can make a leather purse too busy as far as leather designs are concerned ... Traditionally leather tooling designs take up every speck of hide on the piece. The Viking tail chasers are just beautiful, you have done an excellent job.

| | Re: Leather Purse - WIP Hi Lindy your purse is really looking gorgeous and the shading is great.
Susan is absolutely correct about traditional tooling. As a matter of fact there is a group of toolers in our area that display at the state fair every year and every year they have wonderful entries and they seem to increase every year. The group also sits at a table during the show demonstrating which is great to watch and I'm sure has helped create more interest in the art because the group seems to have grown since I started watching them over the last 20+ years. That's actually where I got the inspiration and some help getting started myself and it really is a lot fun...but an expensive hobby as compared to woodburning.
This year I actually saw some entries that were burned as well as tooled. They were just amazing.
But the common theme was and always has been that just about all the pieces were almost totally covered with tooling.

| | Re: Leather Purse - WIP Hi Lindy, the girls are right about leather tooling design, the artisan's cover all but every inch of the leather. What I was thinking maybe not on this one, but on other's you might create. How about working your signature into the design? Maybe some scroll work with your signature in the middle or something like that using design?
I'm really enjoying seeing your progress on this piece.

| | Re: Leather Purse - WIP Thanks ladies!
Both my late brother and my Dad used to do leatherwork so I do know how the piece gets mostly covered with the design. They both used to do lovely work and we still have all their tools.
On this piece what I was setting out to do was rather than try to imitate the toolwork, create something that was distinctly a pyrographic work. I do plan on trying some other pieces where I combine the two.
I really appreciate your kind comments and I am thoroughly enjoying making this purse. I have a wallet that I'm going to make that will match the purse as well.

| | Leather Purse Completed Hi everyone!
I finally finished the Celtic Leather Purse and I would really appreciate your comments and suggestions before I start my next one which I plan to have a face of an animal on the front and that same animal in movement on the back. As you can tell I just haven't decided which animal I want to use.
Thank you for looking! And thank you for helping me improve this art.
