Hi everyone, I decided to try something new (to me) and burn a Leather Purse. I bought a purse kit from Tandy Leather Factory and I am working on the front right now. I haven't decided what to put on the back yet. I have discovered that this type of leather burns at a really low temperature in fact for the light shading I am using 1 on my dial. As I progressI will post some more pictures. Lindy |

Great job Lindy. I used to teach leather tooling and woodburning while working at the Vets Hospital and it's great fun. The guys loved it. At one point we started experimenting and combining the tooling and the burning. You might have to experiment with some tooling on the leather as well. It makes a wonderful finished piece. Several years ago I bought a bunch of key rings and bookmarks from Tandy and did some tooling on them and then and started adding some burning to them and it turned out great and did well at the craft shows. Doris, yes you can burn on leather but you must make sure that it is vegetable tanned. Nedra

Lindy, that is fantastic it takes on the look of being tooled. Great job on the shading and burning skill on the design. Kathy

Thanks! I still have a lot to do including the back piece and maybe a border. I'm quite enjoying it and you know me I have to try everything at least once. *G*

Lindy, nice work, is there any smell that you have to worry about? Nedra, why should it be Vegetable Tanned? Merle

Thank you Merle. You want skins that are vegetable tanned because the skin has to be natural and you don't want any chemicals due to toxicity. Many hunters will tan using salt and that's okay too, again no chemical since they are using sea salt. The smell is not as bad as I thought it would be and there is less scent than when burning wood or paper. You can trust the Tandy's because all of their leather and suede is vegetable tanned. Lindy |

Thanks Lindy for the tanning knowledge. I done some Leather Tooling Many yrs. ago while in the Navy, in fact I still have my leather tools. Maybe I'll try it again someday. I just found out about Tandy Leather about a month ago while looking for leather strips for handles on my Walking Sticks. They sent me a Catalog with a lot of leather kits in it. You got my mind working , thanks. Merle
