Default Iris On Paper

Susan, I received two more of your books on Friday *Flowers & Fairies* and I decided to do up one of your Irises for my Aunt. I used the 100 lb paper and I'm really like the pattern. I wanted to share the end result with you.

Thanks
Linda

Nice work on the Iris, Lindy. How difficult was it to burn the image on paper? I have heard of it done, but have never tried it. Any special tips or techniques for us after your experience?

Bob

Beautiful Lindy! I love the deep tones in the back standard (upper petal) that you can see through the center ofthe flower. The roll over in the falls (lower petals) is perfect. And you really did great with the fine detailing of the beards. Just beautiful.

Now, did you know you can go back and add watercolors to the burning if you want ... the burn becomes a sepia shading behind the color application.

Bob - Burning on paper was interesting. You need to use really heavy paper, for this one and a Celtic Rooster I did I used 100 lb Velum. You're burning way hotter than for wood. I usually start a burning for light tones with my Razortip down around 4 and for this I had to start up around 5 - 5 1/2! Last night I tried on some lighter sketching paper and it scorched through so I really would recommend staying in the heavier papers. It was a lot of fun and you actually can get texture burned onto the paper as well as colour.

Susan - Thank you! I tried doing some painting on the Celtic Rooster but I didn't get the it light enough and it ended up looking like a paint by numbers so I have a lot more experimenting to do there. I used acrylics but I really think I didn't get them watered down enough. This Iris is going to be a gift to my Aunt and I'm going to try another and this time really water down the paints to see if I can get it translucent enough that the burning doesn't get hidden.

Bart - Thank you for your complements.

Regards,
Linda

Hi Lindy, been busy, busy packing and just had a minute to log in. Great job. Of course Iris is my second favorite flower. Love the job you did
