Lindy! Thank you! After your posting of your beautiful purse burning I wanted to give leather a try. I broke a cardinal rule here ... in fact two of them. First I didn't burn a Cardinal but choose a Titmouse instead. Second, since I had not burned leather before I did a quick and dirty cut out from scrap leather for my belt purse. Of course the burning came out delightfully and now I am disappointed in myself for having done it on such a rough cut ... AH! So I am off to cut one correctly out of good leather and do all of the leather steps BEFORE I pick up my Colwood again. The belt purse is about 4 1/2" wide by 5 1/2" long. It has a simple roll over back section to create the front flat. The pine cone pattern was traced onto the inside front wall first. Then I closed the flap and traced the Titmouse. With a soft lead pencil I added pine needles to both patterns so that when the flap is closed the needles from the pine cone match the needles from the Titmouse's branch. Opps, forgot to tell you that I reversed the pine cone pattern on my belt pocket so that the needles would match the Titmouse better. On the back side wall I stitched a pocket about 2" wide so that I can slide my pants belt through it. The finished pocket can carry my car keys, ID and a little money pouch ... so no large purse to bother with when out of the studio. Susan Last edited by Irish; 12-07-2007 at 10:27 AM. |

Beautiful work Susan. Leather takes a burning quite well. You and Lindy are inspiring! I wonder what my wife would say if I burned her purse without telling her? Wink Bob

Susan, just when I think I've seen you do everything you turn around and do something absolutely new. WOWZER what a great idea a belt wallet so well done girl. The patterns you selected are perfect. I do have one question did you have to use a low heat? After I get my projects done I'd like to try it too! Please show us the next one when finished or WIP. Kathy

That little bird looks as humbling to the spirit as though I were pausing for a moment to absorb the presence of a real, living bird. Really nice!

Susan, I love that! What a great idea to burn under the flap and then carry it through on top - now I have to go try that. How did you like burning the leather? Lindy |

Hi Bob! Just wanted to tell you and others that you should only burn on vegetable tanned leather. All other leathers have chemicals and can be toxic for you to burn on them. "Keep burning and learning"...Danette Quote:

Susan, your belt purse is amazing! I love to burn on leather...to answer the question asked about temperature...Leather burning is done on low heat. Thank you for sharing your patterns with us. Danette
