I have just finished this pyrography piece; 'Horse at Petra' 9" X 12" image size. I now just need to construct a frame so it can be entered in The Timber and Working with Wood Show held in Sydney Australia in mid June. I was hoping to enter a small relief carving in the same show but the chances of getting it finished in time are now looking a bit slim as I've barely begun with it. It took a quite a bit longer than I thought, to get the dark areas as dark as I wanted on this piece and in some places the timber would get to a certain level of darkness and no darker. So I was forced to leave well enough, (it never really is) alone. |

That is an outstanding piece of work! Did you have a photograph for reference? Good luck with it in Sydney. Dylan

Thanks Dylan, I used a photo that I took in Petra (Jordan) in April last year for the horse and its bridle etc which I copied fairly literally. I know nothing at all about horses so I needed fairly clear reference material. I extracted the horse from its background, (tourists like me) and added the dark areas at the bottom and bottom right, after that I saw that the composition needed some additional interest at the top so I 'painted' in the rocks from imagination and memory. I like to do 'realist' style work every now and then, when I have some suitable copyright free references, but I mostly do stylised, fantasy and humorous illustration. Dragons are always a good stand-by, nobody can say you've got the anatomy wrong. In this event you can give your imagination free reign, plus you can make the shapes fit the abstract elements of your developing composition. |

Wonderful detailing, the individual hairs and whiskers are impressive and then the fibres on the rope just blew me away. Great job.

David, what a beutifully expressive burn. It looks as if it could actually be a sepia photo. Outstanding! Al |
