Default Exciting news

Whoopeee, good going away news . I got accepted into the Art League in our area and will also be able to teach there as show my work in their gallery. They have a place in the back of the gallery where members teach classes and they have 2 shows a year at a local gallery so I'm way excited.

Also waiting to hear from another gallery to see if I'm accepted. I have to bring in some of my work after Thanksgiving and leave it to be judged. It's a coop gallery and members are juried in by the manager members. They are coop and they try to keep membership limited within the areas of specialty. Right now they only have one wood artist and he is a scuptor and no gourd artists so they are very interested.

If accepted I get a choice of working and pay a smaller commission or not working and pay the full 50% commission. Interesting concept and apparently it's a very gallery well in Central New Mexico. Most of the work sold there is mid-range but they say that it gives the members exposure to move on to galleries in Santa Fe where prices are more high end and getting into a Santa Fe Gallery which has always been my ultimate goal.... and who knows perhaps it will happen before I die!

Nedra

Thumbs up Re: Exciting news

CONGRATULATIONS, Nedra!! I would be extremely surprised if your work ever got turned down. You are a fantastic artist and they'd have to have blinders on not to see that! I am so happy for you and this will hopefully open up all the doors you are looking for. Really happy for you! Bonnie

Thanks Bonnie, Kathy and Woodie I think this is a nice opportunity to become known in the community and I am taking it at that. I don't have any expectations of selling much art work but it will open some doors and that's a start.

Hopefully it will help promote pyrography which does not seem to be very well known around here. There are a few people doing it but none of the galleries I've seen so far have any pyro in it but are very interested and open to it which is very encouraging. It's not easy for pyrographic artists to be accepted into the "art" community so I was thrilled to see the interest here in New Mexico. The fact that the art shows are willing to accept pyrography is far better than I've experienced in WA and TX but perhaps it's a sign that they are more open to non-traditional fine arts medium. I'm guess since I see pottery, fiber art and gourds in fine art shows that this area is far more open-minded than many other areas

So, it might give pyrography some well deserved exposure.

Nedra, congratulations on that acceptance. GREAT! but tell, us, where is this gallery/workshop in New Mexico? We travel through that part of the country on occasion and would like to get a chance to stop in if we hit that town, or maybe even make a detour to get there. We love to visit the Taos/ Santa Fe area, and I've brought our Scout troop to Philmont Scout Ranch up near Cimarron six times over the years. Very strong cultural and artistic vibes adrift in the sky around there!

Al, the Art League and their gallery are in Belen, NM just south of Albuquerque. It's a small community but the art represented there is wonderful. There are a couple of others that I'm working on that are in Tome, Magdelain (? spelling) and Mountainaire. Haven't seen them yet but my neighbor, a Judge from Chicago was impressed with them.

There's others north of Albuquerque in Madrid which is another art community but I really want to start slow especially since I don't have much work left to display or sell.

The gallery in Tome said if I am accepted they would like to get my work in so they have it there in time for the holiday shopping so I guess I really do need to crack the whip and get some burning done when we get back from Kansas and the art show Thanksgiving weekend at the casino!!! And I thought I'd get to enjoy a nice quiet retirement...NOT!!!

The art leage does shows in the gallery and change it every 3 months and I will probably have my show starting after the first of the year and then 2 big shows a year at the Harvey House Museum. A couple of local businesses also display artwork by members of the league so they will get me on that schedule after the first of the year.

I went to the art league meeting today and did a presentation and some of the people were blown away at what you can do with woodburning. They all said they had never seen anything more than outlined work.

Very busy art community for a small area but I'm not complaining.
