| | What to do in a colorado blizzard. Hi All,
This is my first completed pyrography.
Been lots of fun, will definately do more.
Need to get my skills down.
This is a Brittany (my pup) burned with an Optima 2 system and colored with pencil.
Which brings to mind a question. Can I seal colored pencil with a Laquer like Deft? If not, what? Clear wax?
Thanks for the help,
Kel |

| | Re: What to do in a colorado blizzard. Buy a spray can of Artists Fixitive spray to "set" the colored pencil. Once that's done and dry you can spray on a light coat of varnish. |

| | Re: What to do in a colorado blizzard. Beautiful job! Love the colour ! You seemed to have captured her/him pretty darn well! Could use Krylon spray to finish and used for setting coloured pencil.

| | Re: What to do in a colorado blizzard. Krylon makes something also, you may want to PM Pyrographer and ask her what else works, I know there was a thread in the woodburning section that discussed it. By the way nice woodburning.

Take a piece of scrap wood and rub the pencils on it, then try the Deft....I really doubt it will react.....but then, I wouldn't bet Your art on it ha ha |

| | Re: What to do in a colorado blizzard. I don't use color myself anymore BUT when using color, especially pencil it's best to use a spray on finish so that the pencil doesn't bleed.
I personally don't like deft. It smells horrible and I just don't feel it gives much protection. You can certainly use a krylon product but I use a polyacrylic finish in satin. It is available in spray on and because of the addition of the acrylic in the blend it will not yellow.
BTW, great job!

| | Re: What to do in a colorado blizzard. Thanks for the replies. I am overall very pleased with how he turned out, better than I initially expected.
The colored pencil is Prismacolor. I wasn't thinking so much about a reaction with the Deft as that it wouldn't "stick" well. Only been doing the carving thing about a little over a year, so the Deft seems to work well in my carvings, but I don't know about it for the long haul and I would like to have this portrait around for a while. Defniately don't want to experiment on it.
At least not any more than I have.
If anyone has brand suggestions for a spray on polyacrylic brand that has worked well for them and they don't mind sharing, I'm listening.
Thanks all.

| | Re: What to do in a colorado blizzard. The Deft should work just fine. Spray a light coat, let it drythroughly, then another coat. If you want a third or forth, allow each coat to dry totally. Nefra is correct on the Polyacryllic protectant. However, it is a water base protectant. I like the ease of it but perfer Deft over it and definitely over Krylon.
Ya can't spray on a light coat with that stuff unless you stand back 30 feet. Whatever you decide, I would use a satin for sure.
BTW, I would stay by the fireplace in that blizzard and drank hot coco
