Hi Pippin,

I got started with pyrography through wood carving. I used burning as my method to get the fur details on the animals. Then one day I was oing through a magazine for wood projects and saw this Lynx that was woodburned. The article was on a method of doing eyes. Well I just had to try those eyes so I tried doing the woodburning just so I could do the eyes. Discovered I enjoyed it and did a few more projects. When I moved back to Calgary and started teaching carving for Lee Valley Tools, they asked me to also teach Pyrography. At that point I was more interested in teaching carving but I agreed to take it on. Well that was the changing point for me because I had to get much, much better at the burning if I was going to teach it. Since I started teaching the pyrography has become my absolute passion, I still carve now and then, but really I would rather burn something than cut it.

I am self-taught, although my students can take a lot of credit for my progress because they make me really work to stay ahead of them. My favourite authors are Susuan (Lora) Irish and Sue Walters. I think I own almost of Susan's books and I have a couple of Sue Walters. It's also thanks to them that I started experimenting more with different techniques and substrates. I love burning on wood, but I also really enjoy paper, leather, canvas and tagua nut. I've tried burning on shells, didn't work those have to be etched, going to try that one of these day. I also want to try Gourds, but I need to find some that are pre-dried first.

As I kid I was constantly drawing animals as well as landscapes, in my 20's while layed up with Cancer I discovered oil painting and continued with that for many years. I have always been creative, but since I haven't drawn in years those skills are somewhat rusty so I do tend to use photographs and other people's drawings to do my burning with. I am working more with photo's now and I prefer doing wildlife but like to do other topics as well.

As mentioned I use the Razertip and I like it so much, as well as appreciate their warranty and after sales service that I became a dealer with them so I can supply my students with the pens that Lee Valley doesn't carry.

I haven't been active in the Woodburner lately but I've gotten lots of emails from members over the last month or so wondering what's happening.

Unfortunately the woodburner site is down, has been for some time. Who knows. Just keep checking back from time to time it might come back one of these days you never know.

Unfortunately the woodburner site is down, has been for some time and the owner has not been responding to messages. He's had problems with the site from time to time over the years but not as bad as lately so perhaps he just gave up trying. I know he has a full time job and perhaps keeping up with the site and the problems just because too much. Who knows. Just keep checking back from time to time it might come back one of these days you never know.

Ah yes, you are right it's finally up but I'm not sure it's right to be promoting other pyrography forums on this forum.

I don't think mentioning the site is inappropriate, Tina. However the moderators can edit or delete anything thought to be "off base." I know when I started woodburning his site gave me a lot of great help and information from the (older) members. I wouldn't be here without it. However some have been driven away, passed on, or moved on. I no longer go there because of the recent acrimony a few have decided to spread around for their personal gain.

I have links from my 8 sites to the WBF and don't have any financial interest. I also have links to the WCI from my forum because I think there is also a lot of valuable information here. My forum is not associated with my sites and I don't sell or get any financial gain from it. It exists to help others. My businesses have their own sites and stand very well on their own. I don't use or need forums to drive traffic to the business sites. However some of my work has sparked a few threads here that turned out productive for some members.

I think promoting a site on a forum, for financial gain, is a function of the forum owner/moderators rules. Personally I think it is tacky and a bit arrogant to promote a site over and over in an attempt to drive traffic to it, but obviously some people do it. Links in a signature should suffice. Always a gray area though. The WBF doesn't appear to be a "competitor" to the WCI, and is a valuable resource in my opinion.

Thanks Woodartist. If the moderators or administrators feel that anything I have said needs to be deleted I have no problem with that but not for promoting anything because I did not do that.

I'm just a pyrographic artist and wanna be relief carver trying to learn as much as possible and get to know my fellow artists and enthusiasts that's all. Don't have any sites or forums just a computer and an email addy. LOL

And I feel I was appropriate I was not derogatory. Again the moderators or administrators can do whatever they see fit but that is their job not any one else's and as I said I have no problem respecting that.

I don't post that much and can go back to being in the background again. I just really liked the tutorial Susan had on here and the post Pippin had posted with all the questions. I thought it was interesting and was enjoying every ones response and thought I would respond too. I,ve never ever had a problem posting before any where.

I'm just going to go back to my burning and carving now. I hope everyone enjoys their burning and carving. I know I do and will continue to do just that.

Blessings,
Tina aka Teeburn

Have been on this site for only a few day's. Have had my work commented on by whom I figure are some of the best. If each and everyone haven't figured it out yet that "The Brain Is A Terrible Thing", then the point of knit picking is fruitless. Politics is in everything one does whether it's realized or not. A personal beef with someone should be done privately. I learned from experience with working with untold thousands of Marines, that if one is cut down in front of others, it's wrong. Politically and the brain being a terrible thing, one is trying to run for dog catcher and swaying the crowd to get in line. I never vote for a true politician, half of what they say anyway is a bunch of bull.

I have never put my name on a site before or had a site in my name. If I had a site of "How to whittle wooden beaks and pick crap with the chickens", I wouldn't mind if everyone that had the same interests referred one and all to said site and all like it. Dang everyone has heard, birds of a feather flock together and this site has some good feathers, haven't seen anyone's work that I would throw rocks at.

I have sold all my work locally and in Atlanta. Have to figure that the rednecks in the sticks enjoy art and have to price accordingly. Just sorry I have never taken many photos of my art. Never would have had a computer if I hadn't killed an eighty mile an hour deer on the interstate with my scooter. Have had plenty of time in the last two years with eight surgeries to critique my mess and try to make it better. I do the same to others work that I have seen on these sites, but I damn well keep my opinion to myself.

All the rules of engagement I have ever known is speak your peace, I'm going back to my home page and deleting all the threads I've subscribed. This one in particular. The brain is a terrrible thing and that goes for mine too!!!!!!!

Semper Fi HMckinley MSgt Ret. USMC Thanks for everyone's comments and Nedra I still love your work, yours also Mottles!

I still love Nedra's work and many many others here as well. I'm only posting again cause I got an email in my personal email. Just wanted to make it clear about the work, art, burnings and carvings whatever name you wish to use.

I apologize to you and the other members and WCI but I feel fine about myself. I don't usually let things or individuals get to me but that did. It happens to the best of us. Doing my best to let this go.

Thanks.

Blessings,
Tina

Admin hat on again...

I'm going to quote the Bill of Rights here for our stance on posting links to other sites:

Quote:
Right: You have the right to post links to other related sites. If it is your site, we would appreciate a reciprocal link back to our site. Please don't post a site that is in direct competition to our site, that's not fair! Directing people to a totally unrelated website (commonly known as SPAM) is not allowed. Spammers will be banned without warning.

Discussion: The forum is a great place to bring together a variety of information and resources. There should he a relatively free exchange of information. But don't post a link to a magazine or website that is in direct competition to Wood Carving Illustrated. If you have a question about a link you'd like to post, PM BobD, Admin, or one of the Moderators.
I don't see the woodburning site to be in competition with this site at all; We're a carving magazine. The only reason I even set up the pyrography section was because several people asked for it...and it can be related to carving.
