Default Christmas Lamb

I had a chance today to begin a burning based on a pencil drawing I made many years ago. The board is 1/4" mahogany plywood and this is my first chance to burn this wood.

I note here that Mahogany does appear on the toxic woods listing but with a very low rating and shown as a rare reaction. As I have worked with this wood for many years I know that I do not have a reaction to this wood or to the extremely fine dust left from sanding. In fact I have not meet anyone yet that has had a reaction. But I am posting the two links below so that anyone else that wants to try it has the information.

List of Woods Toxic to Man

Health and Safety in the Arts

I have my lamb worked in and hopefully will get a chance to work a little more tomorrow. Right now I am getting a very rich brown tone for my darkest areas with a soft orange rust for my palest. I can't wait to see what happens when this one is done to see what the final coloring of the burning will be after I add a wax finish.

I have several pieces of black walnut plywood waiting ....

Hi Susan, you are such a good artist/draftswoman. Seriously, when you drew this wonderful little piece did you ever think you'd revive it? I think it's going to be a wonderful woodburning. You do plan to use the doggie too right! Hope so....looks like a little collie. Will be watching for your update.

Looks great so far Susan
Kathy, my two little shelties are looking at this and they say that it's got to be a shetland sheepdog.

It is indeed a Sheltie!!! I did a series of Christmas card drawings years ago that included this Sheltie, a Pug with a Santa hat, a Rottie with a hat too, a Newfie tied to the mail box with a big ribbon and bow, a Pek next to the word JOY and a sad eyed bassett looking out from under a ... Santa hat! They went with a series of Halloween Jack Russell pups

So, if the creek don't rise or freeze over I'll start the sheltie tomorrow. This one is an adolescent in that wonder and fun 'I'm into everything' age.

Been through that age with numerous shelties. They are a joy when they grow up but unable to focus all that intelligence as puppies and one of the most destructive puppies if you don't give them a "job". Ah, we survived many remodeling jobs but just barely. Not sure what's worse, a border collie without a job or a sheltie pup.

Hi Susan,

As always that is beautiful! I love the sweetness of the picture.

I look forward to seeing it completed!
