In mut too yah lat lat, or Thunder coming up over land from water, was a great man. Stood by his principles, dealt honestly with a dishonest world.

I can look at that picture of him and almost hear him saying "I am tired of talk that comes to nothing."

Nedra wonderful burning that would look fabulous in my native art collection. I love the attention to detail really outstanding. I have just started into the burning but mine dont look anything like that.

Nedra

We just got back from our trip and I did have some time to burn. As a matter of fact I'm burned out. I've mostly finished his face but of course will set it aside for a few days to study it. I've added detail to his shirt and added a blanket (not in the original photo of this pose). I'm not happy with the creases on the shirt yet but will let my brain cool down and study it for a few days before I figure out what it needs...

It's a challenge working from such old phots because a lot of the detail is gone so I'm referring to a several other photos for reference and relyaing on imagination.

I also still have to do the ribbons on the tips of the feathers and the beads and then maybe he'll be done. I still have 2 weeks before the show so unless I hit another "block" I should have it done in time.
I've also decided to keep this burning "au naturale" in all sepia tones so I will not be coloring the beads.

the trip was relaxing in spite of rain but then in the great northwest what do you expect. We got to see some great stuff and I took lots of photos. We stayed at an RV park in the woods and we had lots of deer so I got some great shots of them....future burnings!

I'm calling Joe done. I think if I futz around with him anymore I"ll ruine a good thing so I've signed my name and calling him finished. All that's left is applying the finish.

Never gonna do another indian with beads!!!!

Nedra, you have done an absolutely beautiful job on Chief Joseph. Somehow you have captured, not only the spirit of the man, but the very escence of the old sepia photographs. Well done!

Thanks very much Al. You know it's the appeal of the old sepia photos that got me into doing the style of burning I do. I have always had a fascination for them and wanted to figure out a way to capture that in my burnings. It took a while to figure out how to do it and master it but I think I finally got the hang of it.

Not too long after I mastered the technique and did my first native american portrait I remember someone criticizing my style saying it wasn't "the right way to burn". I always remember that and chuckle...with every ribbon I earn!!!!

Ain't it quaint, what some folks think is the "right" method of artistic expression?
