Both these tip styles will give you good results, but they are of two completly different designs.
The ones Donna mentions are very similar to the ones I make and work by pushing (touching) the tip straight into the wood to make your scale pattern. This outlines each scale in a fair representation of the scales.
Wood Carvers Supply tips burn from the side and relieve each scale as it burns giving a more realistic look to the scales. In competion, you'd be better served by the "side burn" style tips, but the straight-on ones are a lot easier to use and give a pretty darn good representation. I don't carve competitively so I use the straight on type, but eventually I wll probably go to the more realistic burn of the side style.
