Well now I'm confused, because I'm the one that mentioned 1/16".

The only burning that I'm aware of in marquetry is what Mary (Woodspiritslover) and I have stated in our posts.

I use a electric hot plate and cast iron frying pan to heat the sand in.

Once the sand gets hot, you can either dip the small piece of veneer into the sand or use a spoon to pour the hot sand onto the piece to get the right amount of shading your after.

You need to becareful with the hot sand because the piece you're shading will start to shrink and you'll have gaps in your work.

Hi Lindy,

I think I understand what your doing.

Let's see, you're using marquetry for a background scene, then inlaying a white piece of veneer into the marquetry. You'll then do your pyrography on the piece of white wood. Right?

If so, that sounds like it would be a really nice visual effect!

Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

Hi Lindy,
I did see a piece on marquetry put on by the program "American Wood Worker" on PBS some years ago and it's facinating... in one part they showed how to add shading to a piece by singing it in small bucket of heated sand....before adding it to the inlay. It was a neat process that added a lot to the over all piece. Veins in flowers and leaves could be woodburned also, or the veins in a dragonfly's wings....lots of things. Good idea.

Brian - Exactly! I plan on using the sand shading or the shading in the background, so I'm really trying to combine the two artforms and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for understanding what I'm trying to do and helping to explain it.

Lindy, let us have a glimpse on your creation when done. Good luck to your hands. Mary
