sorry Pat, I just saw this. Saral has an email address but the owner doesn't respond. I have his phone number if you want to call but he is very hard to reach. Also he does not sell direct you have to buy from dealers. If you email me privately I will give you some information on dealers that might ship to the UK... nedraspyrography@aol.com

Hi Susan & welcome. I've just started burning on leather which I use to wrap my talking Sticks as a finishing. So far I've only burned lettering into it and I'm using thin deer skin but here's what I have learned so far. If you are using a soft or thin skin you need to stretch it so that you have less movement in the piece as you burn. I would think the same could be done for tracing. I use pins to tack it down to plywood so I have a solid surface to do the burn on as well as keeping the leather from moving too much.

Okay, now I have to duck *G* but I use old fashioned carbon paper to transfer some of my patterns. Now before anyone hurts me for that, I will give you the caution that carbon paper fumes can be toxic and it doesn't erase off. When I use it, I use a very light touch so it doesn't come through really dark on the piece I'm tracing onto. I also only put my outline on with it. For pieces where I need to put in more detail then I stick with the graphite paper. Other than having a very sick sense of humour I can't say I've had any reaction to using carbon paper.

Please post some of your work as we would love to see it.

Have fun and good luck!

Linda

Just a bit of caution Lindy, although you have not had problems now, it might take years to show up much like those poor people who have suffered long term illness due to asbestos and other toxic materials.

The reason most people avoid carbon paper is the fact that it is almost impossible to erase and it smudges, not to mention the fumes. It might be safe for carving but not burning on it.

Looks good Pat and good subject! If you burn at a lower temperature, then you won't have as much smell. That was a problem I had when I first started burning on leather.

Are you "hooked" yet??
