| | Re: Bodie Ghost Town Door Kathy,
There's a lot I don't understand! But one thing I know, I like your work!
Leave the eye in!
Chances are, Mr. Bodie never spelled his name in his life. He may have been like me, with a 3rd grade education ... and it took me 12 years to get it! Truth is, I'm still getting it and I'll be 56 tomorrow.

| | Re: Bodie Ghost Town Door Kathy, I would never have noticed the lantern's lack of dark shadow myself if you had not done such an outstanding job on the window and fence area! If I cut out just the lantern area from the work the lantern works great ... nicely round and it "lays" right against the wooden walls. It could stand by itself.
But when I was looking at that lower window pane and the huge number of shades you captured, then at the picture as a whole, my thoughts were ... "OH, Please, do that to the lantern too!" All that beautiful chocolate value complimented by the creams and beiges in the window and fence but the lantern has no chocolate.
I think it will pull your eye over to the lantern to emphaisis that nice triangle of interest you created with the composition layout ... from the inside of the house through the window curtains - down to the linear work of the picket fence ... then across to the lantern on the horizontal wood slats! You eye would flow through the triangle because of the chocolate values.

| | Re: Bodie Ghost Town Door Hi Wade: I purposely waiting until today to answer your last post so I could wish you a very ![004[1]1](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/004[1]1.gif) Birthday. Hi Dave: I do recall that the saloons were many 17 saloons 1 church in old Bodie--later in it's history less saloons and more church's. Hi Susan: I don't know where you find the time to help this struggling newby but I'm sure glad you do. I'll have some time today to go back and work on the values. Thanks again! Hi BOBD: LOL, I think your right! tee hee Sure do hope Carnival come back too...between Carnival, Deadwood and Surviver, oh and The Amazing Race that will keep me out of the garage/shop for an hour each week day evening.
Thanks All for all your nice compliments, thoughts for improvement and most of all friendship.
Kathy

| | Re: Bodie Ghost Town Door Hi All:
I added the cast shadow shape of the lantern to the right side. I struggled with the notion that the shadow wouldn't be much wider than it shows here. What ya think? Also I scraped off some of the burn on the two far right side fence posts. I'm disappointed that they don't show up as light in the image as in the original work it self. Oh well...tis, tis.....
As for Mr. Body's, Bodie's, Bodey's eye I'm getting kind of attached to it, so I think I'll leave it. Noticed also he has more friends in the wooden planking too. Oh one more little tid bit the dry vining that winds itself around the fence posts is hops. Just about the only thing that would grow in Bodie other than sage brush. Never heard of a brewery being built would have needed to much precious water. Even wood had to be brought into Bodie for building and firewood by donkey train. There was a gentle side of Bodie eventually with families, banks, mercantile, socials, baseball etc. It was a hard life to be sure many made their fortunes there and many lost their lives there.
Thank you for looking,
Kathy
PS: I tried to attach the image from my first post, but the WCI said I had already uploaded it. I guess I could rename the first one then maybe it would let me upload it. I thought for comparison it would be easier for you. Will see what I can do later. |

| | Re: Bodie Ghost Town Door Fool! to Mother nice nature not it's lol...? I'm confused! You still did a fantastic job! Ghosts and all! Fascinating piece! I could look at it for a great while, and I'm sure if I looked long enough I'd realize it's Mr. Bodie behind the curtain!
