Default Adding wood burning to carvings

I am sure this question has been asked before but I am on lunch break and thought I would post before I forgot my question. I know that a lot of people use wood burners to add punch to their carvings and one that sticks out to me is Lynn O. Doughtry and How he does a perfect job. I have been nosing around on his blog and have not seen him go in depth on the wood burning part. I have a wood burner it came from JO-Ann's so it is probibly to hot or is it? That was one of my questions and the other is are there books out there that go into how to add wood burning to carvings? Any input would be great thanks!
Andy

Hi Andy, actually there is a great book that can help you. You can find it on the Colwood site. It does deal with the Colwood detailer but I think it will help quite a bit. Here's a link to the book Colwood Woodburning Tools Online Shop

Even though I only chip carve I bought this to help me when first started burning and wanted to figure out how to do feathers.

Andy.... You are probably referring to a craft type woodburning pen that has no heat adjustment. While not the ideal tool you can still get very creative with a little patience and imagination. I used this kind of woodburner for years until I bought my Colwood 4-5 years ago. If you haven't got the money or aren't sure about up-grading to a higher-end burner, experiment with the pen. Use light touches and keep your pens clean and sharp. I hone them just like I hone my knives.

There are many good books available, some written by contributors to this site( I have Susan Irish's Book and find it helpful). While they may not go into exactly what you are trying to do they will teach you the basics(and more) and you then can adapt the techniques to what your trying to do. I have both the single temp and adjustable temp burners.
The single tip has not been used since I got the adjustable.
However I have seen some incredible work done with the single tip soldering iron burners. If that is what you have to work with by all means use it.
There is a sticky at the top of this page that tells how to make a temp control for your burner.
Lynn seems to be dedicated to sharing with those of us who don't have his skill. You might post a specific question in the Caracature section and I'm sure he would answer.

I use a small removable chisel tip on my Pyro pen. I seriously doubt if a hobby burner would work very well at it's much too wide and would be hard to control. I used a Detail Master for years until I finally got tired of having to send in the whole handle or a new tip that cost three times as much as a removable one. I had heard that those removable tips didn't work very well but I've had one for the past 5 years and have never had a problem plus the tip seems to last 10 times as long as the Detail Master.

When I burn I only burn the line between the various parts of a figures clothing or a deep wrinkle and then I try to do it as lightly as possible. I don't think there is a book out there that explains my methods and I don't intend to write one. To see a figure after it's been burned prior to painting take a look at the "Granny Get's A Tattoo" posts on my Blog. The first post shows the main figure from all sides which should show you exactly how I go about this process.

I really like the effect this gives a carving and I especially like going to carving shows and seeing that others are adopting it. Even some of the big boys who won't let me play with them are coming around. If you have any questions just drop a comment on my Blog and I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks Jim but what do you mean by a sticky? A link? I don't follow but I would like to know how to make a temp control for my burner.

A sticky is a thread the moderators fix so it does not get rotated out of the primary screen due to dating or inactivity. Look in the top section of Pyrography and you will find that thread. There is a link to a members site that explains the process with pictures.

Not to worry Dude! Truth is I've been on this site for many months and I have not read all the Stickies myself. There are so many resources available on this site it would take some time to read it all!
