Default #2 White Tail Deer Portrait

Here's another burning, using the pointillism technique, hopefully this is better than #1 burning.

I sent away for a shader and a spear point to try other burning techniques.

Smile Very nice Jax, but with the dark wood and grain, you might want to darken the burning a bit so it shows up more. Also keep in mind that it will fade over time. I also recommend burning darker than you actually want it because of that. The contrast of the light wood and dark burning really makes it!

I'm not sure what kind of shader you ordered, but I use the spear shader for 99% of what I do. I love it!

Thumbs Up Hi Jax, your deer looks great burned onto a plate. Did you also burn the dark outer circle--I like it! Your technique is very different from most I've seen and I really like your work. It's a little hard to tell for sure as your image seems a little burry. If I had a suggestion it would be in my opinion I'd like to see the nose having the appearance of being moist. Which would mean making the nose darker with the highlight lighter. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the comments, all appreciated.

Nedra: Will take your advice and darken burnings. "Fading".....even if the burning is sealed??. I've been using a small spade and ordered a spear, narrow and a shading square, large.

Kathy: The outer circle was already on the "plate". Maybe the " fuzzie" image is caused by the pointillism technique or I should check the image on screen before sending.

Monkey LOL Jax it is 'I' who is probably fuzzie and not your image. I've seen some basswood plates that I think it would be easy to burn a narrow circular band. Hummm might just be worth giving it a try at some point.

Hi Jax, not sure you saw Squbrigg AKA Bob's post regarding 'Pepper' in my 'Mandy' thread. So I'm copying it to your 'Deer' thread for you so you don't miss it.

Jax, unless you use a sealer with UV protection, yes it will fade over time. Only ones I know with UV protection are outdoor finishes which can cause yellowing. So, my suggestion is just be sure you burn darker and keep away from direct sunlight or flourescent lights.

I'm assuming when you say spear that you meant a spear shader? I've never used a square shader, only use a spoon on rare occasions and spear shader. If you are going to continue doing pointilism you might want to try a ball tip....boy are they great!Motorcycle

Kathy,

Thanks for passing on Bob's reply.

Nedra,

Thanks for the suggestion on sealing...my next burning will be darker, its a winter wren.

The narrow spear has a fine point....the other is a square shader, both new to me...they haven't arrived as yet.

I found I could shade with the side of the small spade and will probably do more of it.

I tried using a writing tip which doesn't pierce the wood as much as the small spade and makes small dots.

Jax.
