Jim, Your project in Issue #40, Laughing Bear shows drawings with dimensions for the roughing in. I can't seem to get the measurements. For example, the head of the bear is marked 1/2" in from the back sides of the block and then an arc is drawn to those two points but the arc is 1 1/2" in length. How can this be? Is the 1/2" wrong? Or am I missing something? |

Windspirit!....Good question. To get that 1-1/2" measurement, you'd almost have to measure back 1" either side of the back corner. And now that I look at it I'm having a tough time figuring out exactly what those two front measurement's (3/4") are trying to show. I had copied the project into my project drawing and had set aside a stick of basswood to carve two bear from but I hadn't really taken a good look at the layout measurements.

Eddy Smiles, Guess we will just have to wait for Jim Villars response. And.... I agree the 3/4" is the width of the nose area but I wonder what the distance is from the front corner of the block. |

Here's what Jim said: The measurement is 3/4". There is an error on the pattern. The 1/2" measurement is from the back corner to the center of the back of the head. The distance from the front corner of the block is 3/4". Jim |

Thanks to both you Bob and Jim. Those measurements work just fine. This will be my next carving attempt after I finish last months WCI project. Larry |

Same here.... Thank you! And Windspirit, thank you for bringing it up. I probably wouldn't have got to the project until next month while I was sitting on my porch up in the moutains and with no computer I'd probably have spent a whole lot of time mumbling to myself!
