Default Question for Barry McKenzie

In your recent Chip Carving Book and on the Pattern section on this forum, you mentioned using a stab knife wrapped in tape to cut the "vertical edge" of a chip to ensure no chip out. Does this mean that you use the stab knife on all vertical chips and then make the angular cut to relieve the chip? Also, on a three corner chip, what is the "vertical cut" and why use the tape? Wouldn't that interfere with a clean cut?
