Default Question for Arnold Smith - carving an army private

Hi Arnold,
I enjoy your style of carving, and really enjoyed the most recent article in WCI.

You indicate you carved the head separately - do you have a pattern for the head as the pattern provided in the magazine is for the full figure and the head is turned.
Thanks.

Also for the editors - when the carver indicates the finished piece started as more than one why don't you show the patterns for all pieces separately?

Good question, Peter.

With many of our articles we have to create a pattern from the completed carving. We do that by taking reference photos of the carving from all angles and sending the photos to our illustrator. When the add-ons are not glued in place, and we can take things apart to photograph, we do.

With the Private, unfortunately, the head was glued in place, so we did the best we could. That is why we included the front view and the side view of the head separately. While the neck isn't included, we assumed people would leave extra wood there and carve the neck down as the instructions explain.

Best Regards,
Bob Duncan

Peter
Look a little closer and you will see see a separate profile and front view of the head on the pattern pages. (top center)

Peter,
I am sorry I overlooked your question. I have been busy working on my shop and other summertime duties. I hope this will be of help. If you have any other questions let me know.
