My knowledge of canoes is limited but I would say by todays standards it would be what we call the rear & your right but they used it how they wanted. Here is a link, look at the James Bay Frieghter Canoe. Freighter Canoes - Chesuncook Canoe Company In the day these people left Home moved freight or provisions from one settlement to another or discovered new worlds.
