My knowledge of canoes is limited but I would say by todays standards it would be what we call the rear & your right but they used it how they wanted. Here is a link, look at the James Bay Frieghter Canoe.

In the day these people left Home moved freight or provisions from one settlement to another or discovered new worlds. I would imagine sometimes the rear became the front. Brian D.

I think it is about the deal they made with the devil.. They are not in the water they are depicted in the sky. The person in the bow is making the jester of payment, is my take on the carving style of telling a story.... I could be all wet here... H
