Default Old Prospector

When I was in Jr. High School (1959-60), I checked out a book on whittling a couple of times that featured a whittled caricature of an old prospector and his mule. The mule had a backpack, and each of the items on the backpack, i.e. shovel, pick, frying pan, etc., were carved separately.

The book was less than 1/2" thick, and was about 8-1/2" X 12", and as well as I can remember, the cover was green.

Now, the problem, I don't remember the name of the book, or the author. As a kid I wasn't patient enough to embark on the project but I'd like to tackle it now.

Does anyone recollect that particular book, name author, etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JustSayin' (frank)

Lynn,

I followed your link and viewed your work...in a word - fantastic. I love the old west scenes, i.e. the stage holdup, the gold nugget saloon, etc., nice work and the kind of carving I aspire to.

I had the old western town in "Shane" in mind that it would be a good project, along with the gun fighter, etc.

Great work...I hope I get that good. I love western stuff, and I love the cartoon work of Jack Davis - well known illustrator and artist for Mad Magazine...I hope to incorporate the two styles...someday.

Thanks
Frank

Gene,

That's it, and I was wrong about the prospector...it was just the mule...
Thanks

If you want a Prospector, try the Adirondack Hermit in "How to carve wood: a book of projects and Techniques" By Richard Bütz.

Click on the link below, it will let you get a limited preview of the book.

How to carve wood: a book of ... - Google Books

If you scroll down to page 78-85, you'll see the actual pages in the book for the Hermit.
