Question For Lori Carbett

How thick should the blank for a single feather be, and should a large feather be a little thicker than a small feather? Duncan

Default Re: For Lori Carbett

Hi Duncan!
The thickness for the blank should be a minimum of 1/8" to accommodate the ripples and cupping (longitudinal and lateral arc) found in most major wing feathers. Larger feathers may or may not need to be thicker, depending on how much and how deep the rippling or cupping is. Tail feathers have shallower ripples (when they have ripples at all) and hardly any cupping. The Red-Tailed Hawk Tail Feather demo I did on my site is from a 3/16" piece of stock. A wing feather would be thicker (depending on which feather) because of the cupping.
