Carol Kent in her article Twisted Spiral Ornament, Issue # 33, indicates to make a pyramid from the 1" x 6" blank. I'm stumped. How can one do it on a bandsaw and not leave the apex of the pyramid a "sharp" point, and likely unable to carve into the shape the picture in the magazine shows. Help appreciated. Thanks. |

Not sure what is going on here, but this is my second try at a reply. Rob, I was a little confused on these too when I did my first one. Since then I have done over twenty. You will not work complety to the end (the point). Start at the base of the pyramid and work toward the point. I round over the last 1/2 to 3/4 inch. It will make more sense to you as you work down from the base. Chuck

Lay your 1 x 1 inch stick down and draw an angled line on it. At the end that will be the tip, make two marks, each 3/8 inch in from the edge. That will leave a 1/4 inch space remaining. Figure how far you want the taper to go, say 4 inches. Draw a ine across the stick 4 inches from the tip. Now draw a line between each of the tip marks and the cross line 4 inchs up the stick. You should have now have a triangle area on each side of the stick that will be cut off. Do the same measurements and drawing on one of the sides of the stick. On the bandsaw, beginning cutting from the tip and cut along each of the angled line, but stop an inch or so before you get to the cross mark, so the little triangle piece will remain attached to the stick. Turn the stick on it's side and go ahead and cut off completely the two triangle areas here. You can now easily cut off the two triangle pieces you left partly attached by using your knife or a chisel. The stick you have left with have a pyramidal taper, but will end in a little square 1/4 inch on a side. You can also easily change the size of this square by changing your initial measurements. In fact, if you'd like to experiment, you could start with a 1 x 2 inch stick, and make a rectangular pyramid, which you could carve into a rectangular-looking spiral...Idea Claude |

Contact HiHo Sliver or Carolina Carver. They both did the spiral and had their carvings shown in the latest WCI issue. Watch out for HiHo though, he has a twisted sense of humour.Cowboy Don |
