Hi Jim;
I've mentioned Andrew Loomis before as have others on this site, he produced a number of books on how to draw, much of which can be used by woodcarvers when carving the human face.
Here's a web site I've posted before...again as others have, that his complete book on drawing the head and hands is available, all your questions about head width, profile etc can be answered by downloading all the book or just pages that you find interesting.
http://d538518.u320.bigcrawler.com/h.../headhands.htm

There are numerous other books out there on drawing the human figure, all will provide info on human proportions that can be used by woodcarvers, just remember everyone does not match up to these exact proportions , they are only a guideline..

.

Thanks Susan for the information. I don't think I stated my question correctly. I have heard that the head width measurement (front) is approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inches less that the measurement of the profile (from forehead to back of head). Have you heard of such a formula?
Hope what I have said makes sense.
Jim

Just about any porpotion question can be solved by this inexpensive wheel that turns to change all the measurements according to the height of the subject. I've had it so long I can't remember where I got it but it's available just about anyhwere. It's too large to fit completely in my scanner.

My attachment is "Pending Approval"..... Maybe an Anatomy Wheel was an incorrect choice of words, huh? I should have called it The Wheel of Human Figure Proportion. Sorry
