Hey Rick - I just thought I'd pipe up and give a quick THANKS to you for your Whimsical House book. Really love that book. I got a whole bunch of bark just waiting for me to get back to carving (if I can ever get out of house rennovation mode). Can't wait.

Really like the idea of gluing two together and carving in the round. GREAT idea.

Cheers

Hey, Guys, love your articles. I have a question about bark. Is there something you use to keep the bark from flaking? I used a sanding sealer to try to keep the layers together, but now don't know if it look good when I try to paint some of it.
What do you say? Will that sork?
Thanks very much for your help.
Happy Holidays, Emmett

Hi Rick!

I have your book and the DVD and I must say what a great job you did there! Everyone loves the bark carvings I turn out and I am quick to credit you and your instruction. I hope to get to meet you someday and maybe even take a class if you get close enough to the po' south here! :>)

Carve on...

Fred,
I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed by book and DVD and have found some inspiration in them.

Bark carving can be very addictive as you can be quite creative and nobody can tell you that it's wrong. It's fun to just let your mind wander and see what you come up with. Once you learn some technique, there's no stopping whatever your imagination comes up with.

In March 2009, I will be in Wilmington, NC, Richmond, VA, and Townsend, TN as part of my spring 2009 seminar circuit. My schedule will be posted in Chip Chats if you'd like further information. I wish there was a place on this forum to list seminars, etc.

All the best,
Rick Jensen a.k.a. Bark Boy

Hey Rick - why not add your seminars to the Calendar of Events (left side navigation)? Then couldn't you link to your listing there from an announcement in the General Woodcarving topic. Or does that violate a rule that I am unaware of?

Either that or maybe BobD would consider adding a new topic?

Just a thought.
Cheers

Emmett,
I don't know which layers of the bark are falling apart for you but if it is the outer layers, I use a real thin CA Glue (super glue) and an Accelerator to set it up instantly. I do the same thing when I have trouble with the inner bark.

Chuck,
I did look into posting my seminar schedule on the Calendar of Events but it says something about for shows only so I thought I had better not push the issue. I may have to give Bob D. a call and see if we can get something set up.
Thanks,
Rick a.k.a. Bark Boy

Fred,
Actually the class is going to be held about 12 miles north of Wilmington in Hampstead, NC. The class is scheduled for March 9 and March 10, 2009. We are going to be doing a folkart Santa in Basswood. Yes, I do carve basswood too. It is what I call a "sideways Santa". It's about 1 1/2" thick and about 4 1/2" from front to back and about 8" tall.

Right now the only place you can see my schedule would be in Chip Chats as I don't have a website at this time. We plan on working on one this winter and hope to have it all put together before the Spring season starts.

Hopefully this answers some of your questions.

Ahh - didn't realize the Calendar wasn't for classes & seminars and only for shows. Then yeah - I'd say give BobD a shout. Sounds like something most of us would like to have access to in order to see what classes are coming up in our area. I know I'd like that.

Best of luck.
