It may seem a little presumptuous of me to post this seeing that i don't contribute a whole lot to here but the man i want remembered was the greatest woodworker i ever knew, My Grandfather William Franklin Lahmon. William passed away this morning after a month long battle with colon and liver cancer. The things he's taught me will never be forgotten for i pass them down to the next generation and from there on to the next. For you see we are truly immortal so long as each person we touch in our lives remember us, and if i were to list all the things i remember about William then none of us would get through this post for a day or three. Let's just say that everything i know about wood and living off the land was gleaned from him and the things taught to him from his father. It really is amazing how far knowledge can go back if you really think about it, some of the things i'll be working on were done the same way for decades. Our small work shop wasn't much in most folks eyes but it was heaven to me and i could have stayed there for ever. The smell of the fresh cut lumber and turpentine was ambrosia to me in my youth, and the sounds of Grandpa sawing and hammering was like a symphony. Could there be anything closer to heaven than that? Not to me, and i have to believe that this is where we'll meet again. So tinker around with your young ones in you shops or just tell them stories of your youth and the things you learned while they watch you work the wood, for immortality is only just a lesson away. Rest easy now William for you have gained what was once thought to be unreachable.....True immortality. We will miss you. Michael "Gray" Lahmon Grandson and best friend

so sorry to hear about this loss,i know exactly how you feel. i spent so much time in my grand fathers leather shop, and he taught me so much, not only about leather work but craftsmanship, pride in your work, square dealing with people,Faith in God..i often think how they don't make em like that anymore, truth be known your right the peices we pass on,that were taught to us are part of their legacy, and ours and so on and so on. but i still contend that was one of the greatest generations of men being men as is my dad's but i so envied my gran dad and how when they told you something it was so and you banked on it.a hand shake MEANT something ..it was your word and bond. sorry for going on and on not trying to take over your post i promise, once again i am so sorry for your loss, time will indeed help the pain, but never let it fade the memories.

Well done Michael! That was a beautiful tribute to your grandfather and great reminder to all of us of how much we have to be grateful for. Sadly, in our too hectic world where families are often separated by great distance, many never get the opportunity to learn from their grandfathers/mothers. Sounds like you were blessed with a wonderful grandfather and the opportunity to stay close to him. Sorry for your loss but thankful that you'll be there to pass it on! Blessings to you and your family. ChuckT |
