The carving community lost another great carver. John Hillyer passed away last Friday, Feb. 23. He wrote one carving book aimed at beginners and had co-wrote a book on the Mountain-to-Sea Trail. He taught carving classes at the local community college and also at John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. He will be missed.

I should have mentioned, John was from the Asheville, NC area. I had taken a class from him at the community college and had talked to him many times at carving shows. He was often at The Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway giving demonstrations in carving.

Bob, That is sad news, I knew John and his wife; I met them at J.C. Campbell Folk School several years ago. As I remember, he wasn't much older than myself. Do you happen to know how old he was? Rick |

Rick, you're just a kid. I'm a lot older then you are! I was surprised at John's age too, he was 81. I think he always appeared younger due to his love for hiking too. He volunteered time for trail maintenance to both the Appalachian Trail and the Mountain-to-Sea Trail. Always active!

Bob, I guess that is right, I hadn't seen him for over 15 years, so he was a bit younger then. Funny how I compared my age today with his several years back. Thanks Bob, I appreciate the information. |
