Not sure if this posting belongs here or not, but on Feb. 9, 2007 Real Estate and personal property of Josef Wooster will be sold at auction, in Ashley, Ohio. For those that do not know, Josef Wooster was one of the leading master decoy carvers in the US in the 60's thru the 80's. The auction, in addition to his house will include his carving tools, equipment, rough out decoys, and his personal property. The town of Ashley is just up the road from where I live. Tom H

Wow! I hope you're going to be there! I'm taking a class on pruning grapes that day or I'd very seriously try to make the trip. It should be an incredible opportunity to pick up tools and woodcarving related items. This could be a once in a lifetime opportunity; if it was my estate I'd want some woodcarvers there, a kind of tribute in itself. Good luck if you go! I checked the auction listing and didn't see much if anything for carving tools. There are lots of carvings and prints, some by the Ward Bros. Maybe I missed the tools. There were listings for carving vices and holders... Oh well, it's about 2 hours from my house and maybe worth the drive. Mike

Believe me, as an Auctioneer, the best things, like carving tools, are so specific that they won't get listed on an Auction brochure...mostly because the Auctioneer won't know what he's looking at! If I could be there I would! Two hours is surely worth the drive to find out! Once I went to an Auction I knew was seriously under-advertised (seafood net business on the Gulf of Mexico) and I was the only one there that came to bid, the rest were old timers just wanting to watch it sell...I bought $100,000.oo inventory for $2,000.oo. Be there if you can, because you've already heard opportunity knock, be there to open the door! Wade |

The local Delaware newspaper (which serves Ashley, Oh) listed the auction as to occur on Feb. 9 at 11AM; 242 W. High Street, Ashley Oh. The ad stated that the auction will sell "his carving tools, equipment, roughcut decoys, and personal property; at the same time as the house. "Watch for the full auction ad". As I see the "full auction ad" I'll post it. One of the members of our local whittlin group visited the house last week. He said he did not see any tools, but that there were a "ton" of roughouts and blocks ready to rough out. This fellow is new to carving, and was looking at the house; so was not to observant as to carving stuff. Tom H

They may have the tools locked up, to prevent injury or theft. Sure wish I could be there! |

that flyer says he is in the VA hospital! Someone close by might go in and meet and visit him, he might appreciate it and you might get to meet a carving legend!Cowboy there was an old WWII vet in our hospital and he was a friend and neighbor of some folks we know from church, they were unable to visit him..family situation, trip etc...and asked if I would stop by and see him when I drove the van over there. I carved him one of the hands holding a cross (sorry, can't give credit to whoever designed this!) and gave it to him and talked for awhile...kind of a surley ol gentleman....at least on the outside..when I gave him the hand and cross, his eyes teared up and the best he could get out was "this means somethin' "............it did to me too! My husband and I purchased Josef Wooster's estate in May of 2008. We have found a few things that belonged to the family in the attic space. We would be interested in any in depth history, family whereabouts, etc. that any one could offer.
