Dana, Welcome! You cannot go wrong with Ricks beginner kit. I got one for a grand daughter, and covet it still. I hope you enjoy this board as much as I do. Tom H

Welcome DanaB to a fantastic hobby.
As for a box cutter, Hmmm, everyone is jumping on the band wagon sort of speaking sooooooooo, nothing special by using one.
You done great so far, You contacted Lynn,I see he converted you, and you ordered a beginner's kit from Rick. Jolly good showing starting out,
Enjoy and come often and ask questions. Now the only dumb one is the one you don't ask.

Hi Dana,
I am a newbie too--just wanted to let you know you can't go wrong with the beginner set from Rick. I received mine a few weeks ago, and it is perfect.
Welcome )

Welcome Dana;
I did my very first carving using a carpenters chisel,I made a mask{hence my handle}As mentioned by earlier posts,you use whatever you have at hand,be it a box cutter,carpenters chisel or a steak knife for that matter.
Enjoy your new persuit,I know I sure do.Just remember"carve any wood you like,just try not to carve that what" would" be fingers.
Have fun.
Mark

Welcome Dana. Glad to have you aboard. There is a lot of experience here to draw on. You will like it here. Send a pic of what you did with a box cutter.

Glad to have you as a member, Dana!
This is very easy going , relaxed bunch of folks. They are so ready to help.. I have learned so much from them.. Now , if only I could say I retained it all.. I have been carving for about a year and just ordered two Helvie Micro Carving knives from Rick.. pretty handles . Implements sure do get addictive.. ! Charlotte
