Default Yes, another new carver!

I live in Norfolk, Virginia. I first became interested in carving wood when I got a Dremel Multipro for Christmas. I bought a little bag of basswood scraps and got going. I don't have any pictures of my first pieces now, but will post them later.

I found that I prefer whittling by hand, and after trying various knives, have settled on the Exacto Woodcarving knife. It's fun seeing what the various blades will do. I still use the Dremel for relief carving and sanding.

I'm working on a small boat right now. My last finished project was a ball in a cage carving - only the ball was a little skull, and the cage bars were shaped as bones (for Halloween, All Saints Day, and Dia de los Muertos!)

I work in a bank, and find carving a great relief for my eyes and my nerves after staring at figures on a computer all day!

Hello, Thumz looks like I get to be the first one to WELCOME you to this site. Please share your boat when you get it finished. We also like to see Works In Progress too.

Thanks, Mottles and Slather for your kind words of welcome. Mottles, it's especially nice to see all the other women on the board. In most of the craft circles with whom I socialize, I gather all sorts of strange looks when I pull out my knife and wood. I've just recently moved from fabric crafts to wood, at first for practical reasons, but now I'm really beginning to fall in love with the carving process.

Thumz.... makes sure that you get yourself a carving glove and a thumb guard. Those x-acto's love to go all the way to the bone ...especially the curved blades! Fifteen stitches speaking from experience here!

Welcome Thumz,
You are right, there are a lot of women carvers.....and we can always use more. Years ago, doing the local show, men would walk by my table and ask me, "is this your husband's work?" Funny, half the carvers in our club were women.... Welcome and enjoy.
