MA, burning and carving is not the same as playing with matches and knives.

Hello Mike. Checked out your site - you do nice work. I wish I had the opportunity to take courses from Phares and Norbury.

Welcome Mike!

Nice to see another New Yorker. I am in Rockland County.( Should have taken up rock carving) This forum is great. Very warm ( much like the nature of wood) Your carvings are great!!I am a beginner with all of one carving under my belt( unless u count that block where i experimented with Rick's of Little Shavers's tools...I called it modern art and my husband rolled his eyes)
Sure hope you can help me with information like where to get wood supplies....other then from Dick Blicks and Pearl Paint.

Red face Re: Woodcarver from NY

Mischief,

I hope the moderators don't mind personal plugs, but... You might try the Woodcraft Supply stores... I think your closest ones are Norwolk, CT and Allentown, PA. For online catalogues try:

The Woodcraft Store - tell Big Dog MikeB says "Hi"
Woodcarver's Warehouse - Ivan Whilloch's sons
Christian J. Hummels - Ray has his store in Nescopek, Pa
Chipping Away - Dennis Moore in Kitchener, On
and the Woodcraft Supply online

Those are all my personal preferences... normal disclaimers apply ;-).

For mailorder basswood you can't beat Heineke Supply. Now that I'm actually IN the Artistry in Wood (Dayton, Ohio), one of the big benis is hitting their booth Friday night during setup <BG>. Better sources are probably close to you, but you need to hook up with a local woodcarvers club to find them faster... Mid Hudson Wood Carvers Guild or Hudson Valley Woodcarvers? Clubs are just a good source for everthing... period. Welcome to woodcarving... be prepared for a major addiction.

Hey Mike -

Chuck T from NEWR here. I've been away from the WCI board for quite awhile but its the best board on the net IMO. Welcome. Some really good carvers here and some awfully nice folks. Sometimes they're the same people. ;-)Started new position in NYC so I've been away from the boards AND away from carving for too long. Also - been tied up with that side project of mine . . . 4 teens. ;-)

mate!
Chuck
