Default Whittlers mom.........

hi, I am so newbie, not only here but also in the wood world.
I have just begun to whittle.
I love dolsl so thats what I am working on. Here is an image of my first ever whittled and finished doll!
I had no idea of what I was doing. I found some old balsa from when my dad was going to build his plane, and I took my husbands Swiss army single blade and just kinda dug in.....
now making these dolls is liek chips. I cant stop at one.http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24.../wooddoll2.jpg

welcome :-) that is a very nice doll ! realy like it... it looks as if the joints at shoulders and knees and legs are movable ? are they ? wow, really great first carving, do you know why ? since you dared to carve thin, for example at the taille. not many beginners can that. welcome, and i look forward to watch you progressing.

Thank you for the very warm welcome.........
Yes teh doll is jointed...... It took a while on some scrap to figure out the legs, i didnt want traditional joints, but the arms are traditional. ON teh next one i am working on I have decided to make the head movable and teh arms double jointed and teh legs different joint>> I Am so insane.

Anyway, what happened was my husband and daughter were watching eth heartland series about teh woman who whittled dolls from cedar, pine scraps.
She was teh one who taught Jane Fonda for teh DollMaker..a nd it just dawned on me,, just chip and shave away and the doll will appear... and it was like. a light went off and it worked!

Then i figure dout that if i sand in circles with cosmetic emery boards i get ancie smooth suirface.
I can only work in Balsa right now and I do think I can do the same in paulowinia, but balsa is a good start!
here are somne better picture of Whittled Whitney

I wrote abooklet called " the evolution of teh whittled doll and submitted it to the magazine but I havent heard anything as of yert.. I am thinking about publishing it at my lulu store so people can see and try their hand at what I did.....

thoughts from anyone........
