Default Tool Advice

Hi everyone, I am a fairly new carver and have been gathering tools, a few at a time. My question is I have a need for a skew. Do I need both a right angle and a left angle or will one do the job? Any advice would be great thanks in advance.

I'd try a double bevel first and see if that works for your purposes - might save you a few bucks.

If your right handed go with a right skew. Unless you are carving something very large, you can move the piece so you should only need one skew.

Mark,

I wanted to make sure you are asking about straight chisels - correct? Every palm skew I have ever seen is double beveled and full sized tools are available in the double bevel and a single bevel - but as far as I know (and everybody please correct me if I'm wrong) most of the major tool makers - Pfeil, Stubai, Ashley Isles only make a single bevel on one side - the right. Double bevels are very handy.

Now for bent skews - sometimes called corner gouges - they are available in left and right - but they are usually not flat - being a #3 (UK) or #2 (Euro) - and also larger sweeps. Good for cleaning out corners.

Yes I was talking about a straight skewed chisel, Thanks for the info, I didn't think I would need two skews, yet, anyway. I thought a double bevel would be as good as two so I think I will give that a go. By the way your galleries are great.
Thanks again

I am a leftie so I just double beveled my skew so it would work either way.
