BobD.. I would love it if you could change it back for me. It feels like everything went backwards when I open up a topic. Much appreciated.
I spent hours looking at photos down in the gallery, and went to bed with visions of carvings I'd like to work on. I didnt get much sleep last night. LOL
A little bit more about me. I live in west central Minnesota, on a hobby farm with a mile long driveway. We get snowed in , in the winter time. I have plenty of wild life that I take pictures of for future carvings. Deer that come to the back door, Mallards and Geese that come to visit with me while I'm working in my garden. Wild turkeys that walk through the yard, squirrels who insist on watching our TV through our windows, and pheasants that roost up in a tree near the barn.
I have an Uncle that is an on the farm butcher, and I can get plenty of bones for carving on. I made a necklace out of a few bones. He will also give me the heads that have horns on them for cleaning up and painting on. I'd like to learn to carve wooden feathers for the hanging decorations for those painted skulls.
This same Uncle raises Elk and I've carved an elk bust on a walking stick for him for the help he's given me with skulls to paint on.
We have a large herd of buffalo just down the road that I've stopped by to take pictures of. Future carvings there too maybe.
I do have a question, Where can one go to get an identification on a tree? We had one fall down and just miss our house last summer. Its rather large and I asked my hubby not to cut it up too much in case its good carving material. LOL We left the main base tall (15 feet up) because I can forsee a carved Eagle sitting up there someday.
Back to the tree identification, some say its a boxelder, some say its an ash and one just called it a whirligig tree since it had those whirlies with seeds in them that whirled off the tree. I'm not sure on what to call it..
Thanks again folks.. its a pleasure to meet you. Marci.
PS. Where can I find instructions on sharing photos here? |

First, welcome--I should have said that earlier!
Second, I've fixed your display--It should have the oldest on top and get newer as you go down.
Third, here is a link on how to post photos to the gallery http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/t5717.html
Hope this helps!

The elk stick is wonderful. I am intriqued by the bead inlay around him. The white is really effective. I look forward to seeing more of your work posted.
The place you described as your home sounds like paradise, only colder.

Welcome to a fun place to spend some time on a cold winter day, when you're taking a break from carving.
In regard to your tree that was blown down......it sounds very much like some type of Maple. There are several varieties of Maple and as far as the ones in South central Missouri, they all have whirly gig seeds that form and are released in the early summer. If it is a Maple you probably have little ones coming up everywhere. I have several in the yard and have to continually pull them up or cut them.
Again welcome!!!

Carver6, I am so glad you were able to put a name to this tree. I sure hope maple is an ok wood to carve on. We just cut 20+ little ones down from around the barn. They sure do pick the oddest spots to grow. They had to be removed. Sooo... I made walking sticks out of them. Well.. cut and trimmed them for future walking sticks that is.
Thank you again. |

I'm not sure there's a better wood to carve! Lots of Softer, but not many prettier! Carve it green while it's easy to carve and take care of it so it doesn't dry too fast and crack. Maple wood looks sweet enough to eat! Like caramel! Very pretty!
