| | I suppose I ought to introduce myself Greetings,
My parents named me William, my Marines named me Doc. I am a frustrated artist, woodbutcher extrordinaire, and model maker.
I started carving as a Boy Scout and left it for a very long time. Truthfully, I lacked the patience required to carve well.
Several years ago, I came across an old, used lathe at a garage sale and gave it a new home. I started turning pens, bottle stoppers, ornaments, and other small projects but I've never gotten very artistic with it. I was given a scroll saw when a friend moved away and I dabble in that as well.
Last year, I ran across a Woodcarving Illustrated at the local B&N and brough a copy home. I went out and picked up some cheap tools and some soft wood blocks and started messing around. I also started lurking here and on a couple other newsgroups. Dozens of scars later, I'm still trying. I'm slowly picking up new/better tools and figuring out which materials wil work for what projects.
When I'm not making saw dust or wood chips, I wargame and build scale models. I also spend way too much time following Motorsports (not NASCAR), and Soccer.
I live in NY about 70 miles north of NYC with my Bride of 20 years and our small herd of Australian Shepherds. To make a living I get paid to run into burning buildings.
Well that's about it.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled lives.
Doc

| | Re: I suppose I ought to introduce myself Hey Doc, Nice to have you here. As to the patience ( or lack of it) goes; don't worry. Not all woodcarving requires lots of it. There's an excellent carver out there who makes the statement "I like to start a carving at 11:45 and finish by noon". I myself have found that carving has helped me develop a little patience. From your introduction, I assume you spent some time in the Navy. Anyway, welcome, I am sure you will find answers to just about any question you might have, wood carving and anything else for that matter....Tom H |

| | Re: I suppose I ought to introduce myself Welcome Doc! Hey - I am right next door to you in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Glad to see another "local" jumping in. This is a phenominal resource with LOTS of very knowedgable folks - and then people like me. Newbies who badger the others with lots of questions. <grin>
I am a frustrated woodworker who had dreams of building furniture but with 4 teens and my wife I just haven't been able to get the time, money for machines, nor the garage cleaned out for the space. So I figured I'd try something a little smaller scale - like woodcarving. ($850 in tools later . . . )
I am trying to learn as much as I can and have fun in my limited time.
What kinds of wargames are you into? I used to play tons of the Avalon Hill games when I was a teen. No time for that kind of thing lately.
Anyway - welcome aboard!
