I know what you mean? I have bad knees also, need a total knee replacement on my right one but cant have it due to my breathing is too bad for that deep of surgery. I use a walking cane good as House on Tv. LOL

Ive made tons of canes over the years and you can find trees, branches plus so many things to make a cane out of. Go to a hardware store,ck out the wooden handles for paint rollers for painting ceilings, the longer ones, even thoses can be used in a nice straight walking cane{a gentlemans cane} course you will have to make a handle for it also. I like trees & branches with unique knots about them for canes. I hate hearing the old metal clickers people use and I told myself if I must use a cane,I want it to be a really special one!
Picts: Heres 2 nice straight walking canes I made from roller paint arms {wood } I bought at a hardwood store, the handles are carved bone.I made theses about 12 yrs ago and still have them.

Good luck working on a new cane for yourself. Tn~

You didn't mention where abouts you live but unless it's in New York or Chicago there are probably some woods some place nearby. Just take a walk and keep your eyes open. You'll know what you want when you see it. Try and find a couple of pieces, different species and experiment. One may carve better than another.
