| | Rolds Hello My name is Randal Olds.
I live the summer in South East Michigan this is where I grew up on a small farm. 2 years in the Army 69-71. I now spend the winters two in a row in South Texas RioGrandeValley (Alamo) abt 80 degrees today. My wife and I togeather have 5 grown children and 7 grandchildren. I retired from Ford as a maintenance man in March 2000. I have always had a fascination with knives and have had many more cuts on my fingers and hands as a kid than I have had as a carver. I remember sharpening knives on a hand powered grinder for the purpose of skinning Muskrats and coon. I have thought about woodcarving for years but was much more interested in golf and classic cars. I started carving in Feb 2004 and now I'm hooked, I'm quite lucky as I live in a rural area and have access to lots of wood basswood included. My interests are in walking sticks/canes, woodsprits, and caracatures. There is so much to do I don't think I'll get to do it all. I learned how to do fan carving this summer, as someone gave my wife a fan carved bird. This was a real challenge but now I have figured out how its done and have made over 50 of them from cottonwood, cherry, blackwalnut, and white cedar.

| | Re: Rolds Welcome rolds...a neighbor of mine is interested in fan carving, problem is, you have to buy all your wood including the white cedar when you live in the desert! lol but then, have to buy basswood too....you people are lucky that can go locally and get the good wood, but then, we aren't having ice and snow! |
