Default Remnants of a lost era

Hello, I am new to the forum.
Thanks for being here.
WOW! Such a wealth of information and TALENT
Not sure where to place this post…guess it may perhaps fit more than one;
Welcome Members, General Wood Carving, WIP or Wood Carving for Beginners

Remnants of a lost era
1) Me / my thumbs at damnear 70
2) Appalachian primitive dolls

Grandkids re-trigger a passion locked up too long after they found some of my ‘stuff’ >image-s … follow soon as gather up and figure how to gallery post <
and ask, “Gramps can I whittle?” so we started with sticks and scrap.

Couple weeks later >we< obviously need a project
“and now the rest of the story”.

Born and raised in southern Appalachia, the limber jack is no stranger.
Now, retired (twelve years) engineer with the desire to carve working toys.

Quote from a recient find >and< most recent first hand experience …
“Another thing I don’t worry about is distress. My attitude is, if it gets dented or broken, its all in the fun and I’ll fix it”
Figurin this my come in handy I placed a copy on the work bench, sure enough, while carving the second cowboy boot for her first limber jack the toe chipped out from the ankle down. OH! agony and pain. After reading the ‘distress’ note >we< decided to transform the cowboy to a pirate with a peg-leg.
Of course the dolls went home before pictures >BUT< they will be back soon for paint.

The kids and I have three dancing jacks now and wonder if anyone else is interested …maybe… something like … a … junior/intermediate transition ‘build along’ project?
I can provide generic rough out patterns and figure their ‘theme’ will materialize as chips fly.

We also plan to build a theater, relief carve (chisel/ mallet/ intro) theme-stage backdrop with a crank handle dance platform.

Our schedule is sorta-lax we meet every week or two after Sunday school.

Chip

I'm having a bit of difficulty deciphering what you're saying Chip; your mind must be moving faster than mine.

But welcome anyway!

Howdy and welcome to a great site with lots of info.Toys are fun and are easy to get rid of.Every time my grand son or neices come by they head to my garage for a boat or decoy.I have seen some great toys in Fox Fire books from a school in Georgia.I can't remember the # of the book in the series but they are all great. For toys I ordered some salad bowl and toy varnish or my daughter paints with acrylic.Tony

Thanks so much for all the warm welcome(s).
Glad I found this great site.

Guess my theme ‘at this point’
… everything moves…
and not get crazy over fancy detail ‘yet’

WIP
Was hoping the pirate (post 1) would show up today but maybe next Sunday

Got to get some paint on this dude.

See if I can figure how to post an image.
