| | A question about cutting glass - if appropriate! I think BobD said this forum could ask questions about things other than wood carving - so here it goes. BobD, If this is inappropriate then delete this thread.
My Lady-Friend wants to make lamps out of wine bottles. What is or how is the best way to cut a hole in a wine bottle to allow for the electrical cord to go thru the base of a wine bottle & put a bulb unit on top that would make an acceptable lamp. No, not the leg lamp. (not the Christmas movie version)
Any help would be appreciated. Just trying to make my Lady happy!
I know you gals & guys have alot of experience outside of woodcarving that may make me some extra points. So please help!
Thanks!

| | Re: A question about cutting glass - if appropriate! If you power carve, you have the answer in your burrs......diamond burrs will cut glass smoothly and have no ill effects on the burr. A wheel type glass cutter is too difficult to handle in a round cut, but a diamond cutting burr will work.

| | Re: A question about cutting glass - if appropriate! use a diamond drill bit
I had 1 i made from a Coke botte many years ago
It got broke
As Squbrigg said
The Diamond burs that you use whith power carvers should work just fine
I do not know if you have any diamond burrs or which ones you have
I would start with a small one on slower speeds and work up to the size hole I needed
Nice thing about using the diamond burrs is that by doinfg a small hole
you can use the same burr to just keep rounding out the hole till you get to the right size |

| | Re: A question about cutting glass - if appropriate! Helllo,
You also can go to Lowes or somewhere and buy a glass drill bit. They are pretty expensive though. If you do, run the bit at a low rpm (200 or so) and use water a a lube. I drilled our some glass blocks this christmas with a 5/8" in hole and had some mixed results. I Broke some cause I didnt know about the slow rpm and using water as a lube.

| | Re: A question about cutting glass - if appropriate! Home Depot, Lowes, and even Wal Mart
will carry a few of the diamond burrs
They carry the less expensive ones
but should do the job
Look in the area where the Dremel tools and
supplies are
I saw 2 in a package at Wal Mart
the other night less than $7 |

Hi, just noticed this posting, and am interested in cutting glass. Didn't think much of using my good quality diamonds to cut a bottle, so I went to e Bay and searched for diamond bits. This is one set. "BUY NOW 7.49", 30 pc set. This set is closing in 5 or 6 hrs, but there are lots of these sets listed. Diamond drills listed in the same section. |

| | Re: A question about cutting glass - if appropriate! Cutting glass wouldn't effect your diamond burrs, glass is soft to a diamond and wouldn't take an edge off, if that is what you're concerned about. Diamond burrs are made using real industrial grade diamonds, and should last quite a while with general use. Biggest problem is clogging and having them seperate from the adhesive that they are held by, and this usually occurs when they are run too hot.

| | Re: A question about cutting glass - if appropriate! If she is going to run the cord through the hole, make the hole oversize and use a rubber grommet to keep the glass from abrading the cord. Any Radio Shack or Auto Parfts store (among others) will have grommets. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
