Default One more newbie

Rick from Little Shavers tells me it's time for me to come out of hiding and introduce myself so here I am. I'm a new carver and right now I'm trying all different things.
I'm going to try to add some pictures here... now be nice 'cuz these carvings were done with the gouges I bought at Michaels for $8, and my dull knives. I've just bought a set of real gouges and got my knives sharpened (Great Job, Rick) so on my next projects I won't have any excuses. These are my very first carvings The one of my granddaughter and the cabin are done almost like scrimshaw or maybe it's like kohlrosing.. anyway, it's not actually carved.
Anyway, I'm really happy to be joining this group, I really like the atmosphere around here!

Vicky

Hi Vicky,

Your work is very good. I really like the seahorse and the little bird on your finger. Well, all of them actually. You are off to a great start.
I like doing knotwork myself, and your pencil there in the image shows off how small it is.
Again, welcome,
Thor

Thanks for the welcome! I'm sorry, Ron, I forgot to put in descriptions. All are stained wood, no painting. The first is a stylized seagull in flight. It's very small, a little less than 2 inches across and it's very smooth with no detail at all, I just tried to capture the curve of the wings. The next two are like scrimshaw. One is an old cabin and a willow tree done on a basswood cross cut oval with the bark on, it's very detailed, it has a rock chimney and even a wood chopping set up in front of the tree and a rocking chair on the porch. The other is a picture of my granddaughter on a rectangle of hemlock very much like a line drawing - and her nose isn't really that big, that's carver error. The forth picture is a Celtic knot carved into a thin piece of poplar - I think the style is called chip gouging. I used two cuts with my chip knife to make a channel. The last picture is a shallow relief on basswood, about 5 inches by 8 inches. It's a seahorse seen from the side with a clump of tall seaweed in front of him.
