| | Novice This is my first Message Board experience and I'm fairly new to wood carving. I took lessons at an art center last fall then this spring have joined a wood carving club that meets almost every Saturday. I took the class never thinking I would become so fascinated by the art. Now I'm trying to find places to get the right kind of wood and just exactly what kind of tools I need. I have looked at so many online catalogues I've confused myself more than helped. And of course, I've seen so many different patterns that I would like to try my hand at. A major interest of mine is finding how to carve replicas of antique dolls. I havn't found much about it. I have read some threads and think all of you are a treasure trove. I just hope eventually I will be able to be helpful as well. |

| | Re: Novice You are a help already! I speak for others when I say that we get excited every time we get to meet a new carver. It makes me think about why I carve, and challenges me to keep the excitement fresh!
Welcome to the forum. I have not carved dolls but I have done my share of faces. I am certain that the hardest part of the doll will be the face. I would suggest that you get some good quality basswood (Heinecke is a good source http://www.heineckewood.com/). I would buy something like 2"x2" sticks so that I could practice doing faces. Much better to do multiple faces on a cheap stick than on an expensve doll.
I would be sure that I have good sharp knives as well.

| | Re: Novice For tools, contact Rick at Little Shavers.
For wood, contact Dale at Heinecke.
For dolls, search on "Hitty Dolls" and you'll find a whole bunch of stuff on this forum. Do it on a rainy day, and you'll probably spend most of the day reading.
Good luck! |

| | Re: Novice Thanks for the welcome! I had actually found the Little Shavers site and wonderd if the beginners set of tools would be a good start. Of course didn't know who to ask. I'm one of those people that like to jump right into the big project right away but I guess you're right Greg, it would be smarter to practice a few faces first. Awe, such bitter medicine. Bart, I can hardly wait to see if I can find the book you talked about. Am heading for Google right now. Thanks to everyone, alot. Glenda |

| | Re: Novice Welcome to the group Glenda. Like the others, I'd suggest giving Rick at Little SHavers a call and ask his advice. You'll get a gazillion different opinions on what to buy and they are probably all valid and valuable ones. However, it's nice to have a place to go that has both the good advice you're after and the correct tools you'll need to get the job done.
WHile I don't sell tools I too offer a few tips to those interested. So I invite you to check out my Blog. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
