Wink No ears and new to board

Hi my name is Di. I live in Hawaii ...used to be a pro artist with my fingers in everything. I took sculpture class in college some 30 years ago...and bought my first carving tools (not sharpen), needless to say my instructor did not know anything about wood carving and told me to buy a book. An the one I got back in the 70s...did not help me much. My walnut sculptures were a few years in the making due to really dull knives.... Few classes on dogs and shoes, I gather more tools...but no real experience. Anyway I have been disabled...and the doctors screaming at me because I was doing cement work...forced me into trying to do wood again...this time I got the books (about 50 of them)...plus the tools (cost tons). I have been wood carving about four months when I yelled at the neighbor that is a master craftsman that if he had any left over wood,... to throw it down the mountain... he came and look at my work and said I was great and needed to go into competition...I told him that," I did not know what the heck I was doing!" He said that he was not an artist...he still had his ears ... but it was clear to him that I had a talent in wood that he did not. Since then he and others have been dropping off wood.... yet I can say clearly at this point....I am no craftsman and I guess I have no ears. ....so.... I have got tons of questions also...more then glad to have found this site. Di

Hi Di, and welcome.
I hope you will show us pictures of your work. Did you learn how to sharpen those tools?

Hi Di! I haven't been to Hawai'i but by son is going to school there now.

Be sure to post some of your carvings, they already sound intriguing.

Welcome, Di,
Glad you found carving and this message board. You'll find lots of good carving info here. Sharpening continues to be one of the biggest hurdles in a carver's journey. Surf through some of the old postings on that topic and many others as you have the time.
