Thank you all ... you make me feel already like at home . My basic problem which most probably cannot be answered by you I 'm afraid, is the equivalent carvable woods in this part of the world.
Although I fought hard with dictionaries (from english to greek to hungarian) and wikipedia to figure out what is cottonwood etc is, still I 'm not sure if the same tree in central Europe is as hard or as soft as in US or Canada. In certain cases I read that the wood must be fresh (which now I think is wrong) in other cases that it better be oven than air-dried (no idea how to do that). I tried with pinewood (it was the easiest to get hold on to) but the "nerves" or whatever else is called, of that wood are quite stubborn and not easy to discipline . No way to give up though. I have to make one day my own woodspirit and whimsical house. I love you all. Mary

Mary...

I can't help you much on identifying species of wood. If I was you I'd just keep trying different pieces that I'd find until I I had a collection which I liked to try.

You might try checking out www.chrispye-woodcarving.com . Being near your neck of the woods he might be able to help you out some. He must have a contact point somewhere on his web site.

As for nerves... do you mean the wood's grain?
