Talking Newbie from Misery...

Hello all... have to say I am so impressed with all the stuff I have seen on here... you are all so talented.

Just thought I would introduce myself. I am Sean from Springfield, Missouri. About two months ago I meet Russ Hewitt who has a Gouge Chip Carving group and method. Well I went to the meetings / classes and I was HOOKED. My avatar is my first practice piece I did the weekend after my first class and looking at it two months later it is amazing to see the things I did "wrong" on that.... lol

Anyways... on my first "real" project which is a practice/scrap Cherry box with a lid that I got from an instructor. I work on it here and there mostly on weekends since I have work, wife, kids, etc. Well it is pretty much DONE so I will post it once I get pictures taken.

Now I hope you enjoy seeing my projects because our carving is definately different than the beautiful projects you all do!!!
Ok... well bored you Sleepingenough.. hope to talk to many of you as I lose my newbie status!!

Sean

Bored, never. It is always exciting to me, to gaze on the new ideas that new carvers bring forth. Welcome to the world of carving, may it bring you as much pleasure as it has me during my life. Advice.....try every new idea that you can, new style, method, type of carving, till you find your "thing". Most of all....enjoy!

Bob

Sean, Glad you're here. Chatted with you a bit this PM. Looking forward to hearing more and seeing more about the "gouge" chip carving...Did I get that right? Anyway, the carving sure is nice. Tom H

Welcome aboard!!! What carving club in Spfd. are you a member of. I used to be a member of Ozarks Whittlers and Woodcarvers, but dropped out due to work and not being able to attend meetings. Watched some of the members doing designs like yours a few times but never tried it. Hope to get back in with a club eventually when my work hours are more suitable to attending meetings. The plaque(?) you posted is very well done. Keep at it.

Garon,
Group is the Gouge Chip Carvers they also do incised carving... saw a guy do a neat picture from Tom Sawyer... was cool. We meet on Thursdays 7-9pm... I am only commiting every other week myself... but have demos coming up I volunteered for and a couple of shows to enter into. So I need to get cracking on projects....
The plaque is actually a 5" square piece of basswood... and no offense but working with gouge chip carving on this soft wood sucks... lol
I am going to work mostly in the harder woods like cherry, maple, oak, etc

Sean, I introduced myself on another board a few days ago. Glad to see you here.
I really like your Gouge chip carving. Looks great.

Garon, I think their carving club is mainly Gouge chip carving but it is interesting. I met Russ several times and he was more than happy to show his technique. He has taken over 8 years to prfevt it and what I have seen of his displays several times, There isn't much he can't do. He also teaches Gouge chip carving there in sprigfield and have a standing invitation to come any time I am through Sprogfield.
As you know, It is hard to get together.
Maybe yopu and Sean can hook up.
