Relatively new to carving and definitely new to this site. Just looking for tips and ideas. If I had one opening question it would be about tool basics. What to get, where to get it, and how to sharpen it. Can't post a picture yet but I can tell you I have carved a boot, couple of birds, that kind of thing. I don't feel my tools are adequate though. I bought the one basic knife at Woodcrafters and I have an older set of carving tools. I don't know how good or appropriate they are???

We are full time travelers and I don't know when we'll pass the next wood carving store? In the meantime maybe I can get some advice?

Thanx!

If they're sharp and you can make chips then you've got most of the tools you need. The biggest indicator of a need for a tool or the adequacy of tools that you already have is when you're working on a project and you're dissatisfied with the performance of a particular tool or the outcome of your efforts. Grab a copy of WCI and send away to Little Shavers, Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers or one of the many other carving suppliers advertising in it and get yourself a catalog. Then compare the tools that you have with what is available. You can also give these folks a call and they'll be happy to answer any questions that you have. As you've probably read in another thread Little Shavers even offers sharpening services.

I agree with Eddy, grab an issue and send away for some toys---ooops-I mean tools. I like the Little Shavers beginner set. It was my first set of tools from my husband- very happy with them! Buy the best you can afford and sharpen often!
