A great way to start carving is to take a carving workshop. I think all carvers worry about keeping their tools sharp and it just comes with time--along the way other carvers will help you learn how to sharpen. The good folks at the Woodcraft shop will be a big help to you, too. You're lucky if you're close to their shop to take advantage of their expertise.

Good luck and have fun--welcome to this forum.

Welcome to the forum. Learning to sharpen can be perplexing but will get easier with practice. When I started the trend was to use various x-acto blades while you learned.

Don't worry about keeping the knife sharp, when the carving is sharp! Just let it happen. If you need help, don't ever be afraid to ask! The only silly question, is the one never asked! Welcome to the WCI family. People here will be sure glad to help! Help you in any way i can.
Good Luck, and Best wishes!, Rob V. (Lazy Carver)
